Recruiting at all levels!

We are broadly interested in exceptionally driven individuals with background and/or interests in gene regulation, synthetic biology, functional genomics, quantitative biology, computational biology, cell differentiation control, tissue injury responses, and immuno-oncology.

We are also interested in individuals with a quantitative background to pursue interdisciplinary work that merges theory and experimental implementation of algorithms for efficiently exploring numerous combinations of genetic perturbations.

We value strong work ethic, enthusiasm, creativity, rigor, and affinity for collaborations.

We strive to create a supportive environment where individuals are encouraged to grow together scientifically and professionally by challenging ideas, each other, and themselves.

Prospective graduate students:

Instructions for UCSF graduate students considering a rotation: Please contact Chris with your CV, a statement of your interest in the lab, and potential start and end dates of rotation. Please do so as early as possible to express your interest in rotating, preferably 2 months or more ahead of the start of your potential rotation. If there is indeed mutual interest in a rotation, Chris will schedule several 1:1 journal club sessions with you prior to your rotation, each time to discuss your reading of key papers chosen to reflect the conceptual foundations of the lab and are relevant to your interests. This 1:1 journal club is meant to facilitate mutual evaluations of scientific fit. I am happy to discuss the potential for co-mentorships, where appropriate, such as for students with interests in computation or specific biological domains in tissue biology.

Prospective postdocs and physician-scientists:

Please see additional descriptions in the job posting. We are especially interested in individuals at the post-doctoral level who bring additional expertise in computational biology or specific biological domains in tissue biology. We have specific projects that could be a strong fit with individuals experienced or interested in genome regulation, tissue regeneration, fibrosis, liver biology, and/or immuno-oncology. I am happy to discuss potential formal or informal co-mentorship arrangements that may strengthen your career development, if appropriate. We are surrounded by broad and deep scientific expertise that complement our existing strengths. Where appropriate, outstanding candidates will be considered for opportunities to work collaboratively with help from junior specialists.

Please contact Chris with your CV, a statement of your interest in the lab, potential start date, and contact information for 2-3 references.

Prospective junior specialists:

Please see job posting.

We are recruiting for a hybrid wet/dry lab junior specialist for ~2-year full-time commitment as described below. We are interested in individuals with well-developed skills in programming and/or data analysis AND interest and experience/skills at the bench in a molecular biology laboratory setting. This is a unique opportunity to build upon those hybrid wet/dry lab skills in the areas of CRISPR synthetic biology and functional genomics, including the analysis of data sets from CRISPR perturbations with single-cell transcriptomic readouts. The successful candidate will be a highly independent and driven individual with the ability to contribute to the project creatively. Interested individuals will receive relevant career mentorship, including PhD and/or MD-PhD career paths.

If interested, please directly email Chris one pdf attachment that includes your CV and the following information:

1. Why are you interested in the lab? Please describe your fit for this wet/dry hybrid role.

3. Are you planning to apply to graduate/professional school within the next 3 years? If so, what type of program are you considering and when do you plan to apply?

4. What are the earliest and latest dates you can start?

5. Please provide the contact information for 1-3 references and indicate their professional relationship to you. We are looking for people who would be willing to speak to us about their experience working with you in your previous research and/or job positions.

6. If you graduated from college <5 years ago, please provide your academic transcripts for all of your education starting from undergraduate degrees and above.

We are located at the UCSF Parnassus campus in the Institute for Human Genetics, with newly remodeled space in HSE9.
